My Airfix 1:72 scale B-24 Liberator D is now built as an RAF Coastal Command Mk.V version. This is not finished as a particular aircraft but instead inspired by those flown by 120 Squadron based in Iceland.
120 squadron was very successful in its RAF Coastal Command role, sinking 14 U-boats outright; credited with a share in sinking three more, plus eight damaged. This was the highest kill total in Coastal Command, achieved while flying from Northern Ireland, Iceland, and in support of Operation Overlord – the Allied invasion of France in 1944.
As we all know this model is a classic tail sitter and as I decided very early on that I was not going to load the nose with weights, one of my last actions was to fit the rear crew ladder.
Now, in my view this is where Airfix have not done as good a job with this kit as their original B-24. On the old kit it could even be raised and lowered while on this new one it is supposed to be just glued to the edge of the access door frame. This I found doesn’t stay glued in place for very long! So, I drilled a couple of holes to secure the ladder perfectly in place which has proven to be a much stronger fitting option.
I now need to decide whether to add a bit of weathering, oil and soot stains and panel lines, but for now, I’m going to enjoy it in its just washed state.
Paints were Tamiya white, and Vallejo dark sea grey and UKScaleModeller canopy masks.
